Four appointees from that SOB, Newsom. Will we ever get out from underneath the crushing weight of the Democratic fiefdom we are corroding from? SOS CALIFORNIA!!!

I hear you but it's the voters who voted for these people. The voters know now and knew then what they were getting because they have been getting it for over 10 years. This is what they want.

Mark, most people who vote pay little attention to politics and align themselves with a party and whom ever runs on their party's ticket, well, that's who they vote for and trust.

The voters vote for these people, yet....things have been anted up a LOT in the past three years with Newsom assuming the position of a dictator during the scamdemic, and the legislature licking his boots all the way down the line, if not the boots of their campaign benefactors. Now, if in the next one or two election cycles it all remains the same, then your claim is 100% valid.

What's with this compulsion to appoint black lesbians? Like why is there political pressure to make so many appointments based on race and sexuality? The cynic in me thinks its because any criticism of what they do in those roles can be deflected with the race, sex, or sexuality card. Its a very strange recent phenomenon. I won't be surprised I am accused of racism for even asking this question but its clearly a trend and I can't piece together a logical answer.

It's all part of the identity politics divide-and-rule strategy the Dems have had for a few decades now. We're supposed to celebrate the promoted, glorified individual who has so courageously overcome prejudicial barriers, regardless of what their past record or current policy positions are.

If we don't, in this case we're misogynistic, racist homophobes whose opinions must be quashed.

I'm sure this is a silly question but don't you have to be a resident of a state to be appointed to be one of it's Senators?

According to her Wikipedia page, which has either been newly published or updated in the last day: "She and her partner, Neneki Lee, have a daughter. They moved to Maryland in 2021 when she assumed the presidency of EMILY's List. Governor Newsom's office stated Butler would reregister to vote in California before taking office as a senator."

If this information is true, however, it does not clarify the issue of state residency. In fact, it raises potentially larger issues of voter registration rules in California. If she is registered to vote in Maryland, that suggests she assumed residency in Maryland (for tax and other reasons). So is it legal in California to allow a non-resident of the state to register (or "reregister") to vote?

Expand full comment

Don’t you have to be a resident for a period of time to establish that you are a resident of that state? Show gas bills, driver’s license, home address. Is the governor allowed to just waive those requirements? By doing so wouldn’t that allow illegals to vote?

I guess that problem is easily solved. Gavin provides a CA homestead for Laphonza Butler.

WTF?? I thought he was gonna appoint Barbara Lee?? This woman's CV sounds like the same old BS: corporatist through and through. Seriously: tick off the boxes. Black. Lesbian. Represents corporations against her former union activists.

I read elsewhere that Newsom didn’t want to appoint one of the ones running for the office because it wouldn’t be fair to give one of the candidates the benefit of incumbency. He may be right about that being unfair to the candidates, but apparently being unfair to the people of California was not an issue.

He moves in Pelosi’s orbit and Pelosi wants Adam Schiff. If Barbara Lee were the incumbent in the election, Schiff would lose to her.

Expand full comment

Exactly. Newsom is related to Pelosi somehow. Newsoms, Pelosis and the Getty family are the power people in CA. Adam Schiff is from old big money.

And in fact this chick can run as an incumbent and she hasn’t said she won’t

I never thought he would appoint Barbara Lee. After all, she voted against a war once. Can't have that in the Democratic Party.

It's so California to appoint someone who lives in Maryland to the US Senate.

I’m sure Californians are thrilled. Especially the conservatives (they DO exist).

I dont want to be too obtuse here, but isnt this just business as usual? She seems perfect for the job, at least on paper. I guess what I ask myself more and more is: How did we get here and how do we get away from this?

So she lives in Maryland but she gets to be California's Senator? How's that work?

The article is informative, but I think you need to put "activists" in quotes. She's more of a political opportunist. She isn't much of a union person if she worked against Uber's drivers and spends her time lobbying on behalf of AirBnb.

How will we ever stop discrimination if we continue to allow people in power to unabashedly say out loud they will only accept a certain race or sex? How is this even legal? If someone stood up there and said that they will only be appointing a white male, would that be legal?

At the risk of sounding cynical, it was going to be some hack, so it may as well be this one. No one is surprised that Newsom would select a proactive baby killer, identity hire, non-resident, Marxist economic charlatan political activist. California is already a lost cause. The other sane States just must make sure that they don’t have to subsidize a failing Cali.. It is imperative.

You clearly have no understanding of what a Marxist is. The thought that Newsom is a Marxist himself or would appoint one proves that.

Please stop insulting Marxists. Call me a pinko Commie if you want, but not a Democrat. Hell! I voted for JD Vance for Senate for the sole reason that he was opposed to the Ukraine war.

Guess this way he can keep his political promise and keep Pelosi, who I understand is backing Adam Schiff, happy. I am not looking forward to his presidential run.
